Q104.5 FM Ken O'Neil - Interview with Shawn Sherwood - April 13, 2015
Ken O' Neil - "Always great to shine a spotlight on local artists. This morning its Shawn Sherwood; writer, producer, multi-instrumentalist from the Dryden group YourEnvy. They've got a new album called Darkside, he's here to tell us about it. Hey Shawn, you've been doing this a long time, lets go back to the beginning."
Shawn Sherwood - "When we were in high school in the late 90's, me and three guys from Dryden here got together and started playing. I've been playing the guitar since about 1996, didn't have much experience at the time. Right away we started recording on the computer, you know, way back then and we recorded a few little demos here and there over the years and then there was a big delay between that time up until about 2010 when I started getting back into it with a new group and that's when I started writing for this album."
Ken O' Neil - "Tell me about the new guys that you've added"
Shawn Sherwood - "Well Clint Gottinger on vocals, he came onboard in 2013. We've got Glen MacDonald now on guitar and we've got Susan Traini on drums... very good drummer. Uh, everybody again is local, and it was the first time we played this weekend all together as a band and it sounded absolutely perfect."
Ken O' Neil - "Now lets talk about the music of YourEnvy, its pretty wide spread from rock to blues to metal you say?"
Shawn Sherwood - "That's correct, yeah the opening track starts with you know, your basic blues song, and as the album progresses, it runs through some acoustic rock, a little bit of country, closer to the end it starts getting into a couple hard rock songs. There's something for everybody on that disc.
Ken O' Neil - "This was recorded in your home studio, tell me about that."
Shawn Sherwood - "This is a project that took about fourteen months to complete. I did mix it, and master it myself... I wasn't going to originally but when it was all said and done, um, I was hearing great things about the sound quality and everything like that so we decided to just go with that." (Ken O' Neil - "Sure") "It turned out quite well."
Ken O' Neil - "Lets talk about the song Blue Ale, where does that come from?"
Shawn Sherwood - "Blue Ale... well my favorite type of music to play on guitar is blues. I thought I'd give it a go and see what I could come up with for a blues song and it ended up being one of my favorites. Its something close to home that I think anybody can relate to, its just a fun song that I thought sounded great to open the CD with."
Ken O' Neil - "That's Shawn Sherwood, the brains behind YourEnvy. We've got a link to the YourEnvy Official Website on the Q104 page at kenoraonline.com . Shawn thanks so much for your time today. Here's Blue Ale on Q104."
